An Italian doctor has caused controversy in the medical world with his experiment that could mark one of the biggest biological revolutions in the future but also cause the biggest ethical jolt in the world. This doctor, named Sergio Canavero, is after the possibility of making a human head transplant possible. He says he will do this by cutting the head off of a human body and putting it on the body of another human. The biggest moral shock in this whole thing is that the donor head will be of a living human being. Would people allow that?

Sergion Canavero belongs to the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation that works in Italy. It was in 2013 that he came up with the idea that one person’s head could be transplanted on another human body. Canavero was serious with his proposal and so he has moved to America to see if he could get some support for his project. For support for his project he will talk about it at American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons. He will see if he could also convince some sponsors for his project.

Canavero is not pursuing this dream out of nowhere. In fact, he is looking for support for this project because a similar experiment has been performed in the past. This particular experiment was performed on monkeys wherein one monkey’s head was successfully replaced with another monkey’s but the problem with this project was that his new monkey could not live for 10 days. This experiment was not welcomed by people and was labeled as a grotesque experiment.

Canavero talks about the possibility of this transplant in a recent article where he says that it can be made possible by making a connection of the two severed stumps of the spinal cord. A professor of neurological surgery from University of California, called Harry Goldsmith, has talked about the experiment and clearly stated that the experiment will not be successful because of the complexities that are involved in the procedure.

He also said that the procedure is extremely grotesque and on the moral grounds it will never be accepted by the rest of the community even if it becomes successful somehow. Canavero thinks that he will first look for help in America and Europe for some sponsors. However, if he does not find help here he will move on to other countries.

Canavero clearly said in his statement that he will not do something that people in the society won’t approve of. However, he believes that people all around the world need to be told about the experiment so they can make their decisions. He thinks that taking approval of only the people of the US and the UK is not enough.

He said that even if the experiment is not approved in these two countries it does not mean that the rest of the world does not approve of it too. At the end he said some really nice words that he would only go to the moon when he knows there are people who will follow them.
